“…and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. -Matthew 6:6b (NRSVCE)
God reveals Himself in many ways. Creator, Master, King…but maybe one of the most well-known titles of God is Father. In fact, we call the first person of the trinity God the Father, and Jesus speaks about His Father and our Father in heaven many, many times throughout the gospels.
Fatherhood is so closely associated with God that our own fathers paint for us maybe the most vivid picture of God the Father, so much so that the lack of a good father can cause a “father wound.” As a deep part of our human nature, we all inherently desire a father to look up to and want our father to be proud of us.
This desire for our father to be proud of us can motivate us in many things, and if we have a good father who well reflects God the Father, this desire can motivate us to be the best version of ourselves.
As Catholics, we must take this desire to the next level. We must remember that God loves us more than any human father ever could, and we must want to make God our Father proud…and remember that He sees everything we do.
Love of our Father must be our motivation, because love is what will forge us into the saints He created us to be.
